German Chancellor Angela Merkel greeted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Monday in Germany, following her first state visit to the US last week. Merkel voiced support for a swift conclusion of a trade deal between the EU and Japan, while Abe expressed concern about a global trend towards protectionism. The contrast between her interactions with Trump and those with Abe were as striking in terms of imagery as they were in words. Needless to say, Abe appeared perfectly happy to shake the chancellor’s hand.
