The deployment of the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group has been extended by a month so the warships can conduct presence operations off the coast of Korea, the commander of the strike group has said in a message to his crew.

The action follows President Donald Trump’s erroneous statement a week earlier that the Vinson was steaming toward Korea in response to provocative nuclear behavior by Pyongyang.

The carrier, at the time, was sailing in the opposite direction to participate in joint exercises with the Australian Navy in the Indian Ocean. “We’re sending an armada,” Trump mistakenly said last Tuesday.
