Russia’s defense ministry said the country’s forces will track US aircraft as targets in Syria, following the downing of a Syrian jet by a US fighter, Bloomberg reports.

“As a result of recent encounters involving pro-Syrian Regime and Russian forces, we have taken prudent measures to reposition aircraft over Syria,” US Army Col Ryan Dillan said Monday.

Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford defended the US action, saying that the plane was shot down in self defense, adding that the US is working to restore coordination, stressing that the US will “work to restore that deconfliction channel in the next few hours.”
