Seventeen Hong Kong restaurants offering moderate-priced food have been added to this year’s Michelin Bib Gourmand list, bringing the total to 73.

Michelin unveiled the Bib Gourmand list for Hong Kong and Macau on Monday, Wen Wei Po reported.

Of the 82 restaurants on the list, 73 are in Hong Kong and nine in Macau, with 17 Hong Kong restaurants first-time awardees.

The Bib Gourmand award is handed out to restaurants that offer a quality three-course set menu for a maximum of HK$400 (US$51).

Among the 17 new awardees, eight offer Cantonese cuisine.

“The selection highlights the richness of the local culinary scene and the quality of Cantonese cuisine,” said Michael Ellis, international director in charge of the Michelin Guides.

Two restaurants serving Cantonese soup noodles made the list this year, namely Eng Kee Noodle Shop in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island, which is a 23-year-old family-run restaurant, and 40-year-old Mak Man Kee in Jordan, which offers prawn wonton noodles.

Trusty Congee King in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island is the first congee shop to win a Bib Gourmand award. The congee offered is cooked in fish broth, which provides extra flavor.

Ju Xing Home on Portland Street in Mong Kok, which is already renowned for its Cantonese-style dishes among acclaimed chefs in the city, is also on the list for the first time, Apple Daily reported.

Chef Wu Jian, 39, said he was very happy that the restaurant had been listed on Bib Gourmand, adding that he had no fear that the landlord  would raise the rent after the Michelin honor.

The full Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macau 2018 is to be announced on November 30.
