A 44-year-old local man was arrested for alleged possession of offensive weapons on Tuesday in Mong Kok, Kowloon.

The unemployed man surnamed Lee, a drug abuser with a suspected triad background, was arrested in a guesthouse in Portland Street in Mong Kok, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Lee was arrested because he carried a knife and forced a 70-year-old man on the street to drink a can of Coke – at knifepoint – on Friday at the intersection of Arran Street and Canton Road in Mong Kok.

Lee also allegedly threatened a 50-year-old taxi driver surnamed Lam with the knife. But he dropped the weapon on the ground and escaped before police officers arrived.

Lee may have carried the knife for self-protection because he owed someone money, Apple Daily reported.

Police believe it was possible Lee had been affected by drugs when the alleged offenses occurred.

Officers examined surveillance camera footage and located the suspect before escorting him to Wong Tai Sin Estate for a house search.

The anti-triad squad at Mong Kok police is following up the case.
