Chinese travellers have made 461 million trips and spent 385.6 billion yuan (US$58 billion) over the first four days of Golden Week, an increase of 11.4% and 13.6% from a year earlier, respectively, the 21st Century Business Herald reported.

The eight-day Chinese National Day holiday, nicknamed Golden Week and commencing October 1, is seen as a major boost to domestic consumption and tourism.

In some popular tourist attractions, like the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing city, Jiangsu province, the number of tourists exceeded 80,000 on October 3, leading to a temporary breakdown of the 4G service.

According to the National Tourism Bureau, the total number of trips made during this period is expected to reach 710 million, which will quadruple the figure from 2008.

Meanwhile, the total amount of spending is estimated to grow around seven times compared to 2008, adding up to 590 billion yuan.
