The Clockenflap Music Festival returns to Hong Kong’s Central Harborfront this weekend (November 17-19), with an assortment of international acts – from generational lynchpins to up-and-coming indie artists – bracing a city that was, up until a few years ago, considered a musical backwater.

The event started out in 2008 with a couple of local Hong Kong bands and one UK indie band performing at a small outdoor venue. Last year, the festival attracted more than 70,000 revelers.

Clockenflap’s 10th edition returns to the Central location it debuted at last year, with stages set against a backdrop of Hong Kong’s famous skyline. The festival involves more than 100 acts performing across five stages and its headliners. Headliners The Prodigy and Massive Attack have never previously appeared at any Asian festivals outside of Japan or Korea.

For festival-goers unsure who to check out, here’s a sample of some of the most interesting acts set to serenade Victoria Harbor this weekend, as selected by Asia Times.

Feist

Canadian indie-pop singer-songwriter and guitarist Leslie Feist will be making her first appearance in Hong Kong.

Fan Hung A

More than ten years since their last performance, Hong Kong legends Fan Hung A will return with a special reunion show. Not to be missed.

Tinariwen

A band born formed in a crossfire hurricane of war and rebellion in Northern Africa in the late 1970s, Tinariwen know a thing or two about breaking down borders. Proving world music has no boundaries, they’ve played all around the globe with some of the biggest names in music, from Carlos Santana to Robert Plant.

If you haven’t become obsessed with MØ yet, don’t worry – you soon will. One of the fastest rising musical stars on the planet, the Danish synth-pop singer-songwriter is set to go stratospheric with the release of her hugely anticipated second album this year. She makes her Clockenflap debut on Sunday.

Pedicab

Dance along with a Filipino band who wear alien helmets crafted from common household items (why not?).
