A 14-year-old boy fell from height after hanging on to the outside of an escalator handrail at a shopping mall in Tseung Kwan O, in Hong Kong’s New Territories, on Friday.

At 4:10 pm, the student – who is Brazilian by nationality – was seen holding onto the handrail of an upward escalator at TKO Gateway, a shopping mall at Tseung Kwan O’sHau Tak Estate, Apple Daily reports.

A video clip captured from a security camera shows that the boy held on to the handrail as the escalator ascended from the ground floor to the first floor. On reaching the first floor, he attempted to climb over a glass fence but failed. He fell five meters to the ground, where he lay unconscious.

Some of his classmates were at the scene. He was sent to hospital and was reported to be in a stable condition.

According to Oriental Daily, the boy is a Form 2 student at an international school in Tseung Kwan O.
