Prosecutors have dropped one charge of theft against a 38-year-old Filipina domestic worker accused of stealing a judge’s wallet – but will maintain another charge that she stole money from a co-worker.

The defendant, Canacio Marites Patino, was formerly an employee of Justice Jonathan Harris. She originally faced two counts of theft from the judge’s villa on Mount Kellett Road, on The Peak, Hong Kong Island, between January 9 and 12.

The original accusations were that she stole the judge’s wallet,  containing HK$700 (US$89) in cash, two credit cards and a driver’s license, as well as HK$590 in cash from another domestic worker employed by the judge. The charge relating to the wallet has been dropped.

No plea was taken at the Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and the defendant was granted a cash bail of HK$500. She was told not to leave town, go to the villa, contact the co-worker or the judge’s wife.

The trial was adjourned to March 20.
