A Filipino domestic worker in Hong Kong was granted a bonus for adapting efficiently to a new task and taking good care of an elderly family member while the old woman’s regular caregiver was overseas.
Amelita, who arrived in Hong Kong last year, was asked by her male employer to take care of his 85-year-old mother for 20 days while the old woman’s regular maid was on a visit back home in Indonesia, reports sunwebhk.com, a news portal for Filipinos in Hong Kong.
He said his mother was forgetful and could not be left alone, and since his son had left Hong Kong for studies in England, he needed Amelita to take care of the elderly woman.
Amelita said she was nervous about this new task as she had never taken care of an elderly person. As well, her friends warned her that the old woman had a bad personality, which made her worry even more. However, she assured her boss she would serve his mother well so that there would be no problems between them.
At the end of the 20-day period when the Indonesian caregiver returned, Amelita’s employer said his mother was happy with her service, and said all the dishes she cooked were delicious. He gave her a bonus as a reward for her good work.
Amelita said the bonus helped her increase her savings for her family in the Philippines.
