A 32-year-old asylum seeker from India was arrested on Monday for allegedly snatching a woman’s purse on a street in North Point on Hong Kong Island on Monday.

In the early hours on Monday, a 69-year-old woman and her domestic worker, aged 36, got out of a taxi at the intersection of King’s Road and Healthy Street West, Oriental Daily reported. Soon afterward, a man suddenly came forward from a dark corner and snatched the older woman’s handbag before running off in the direction  of the North Point MTR station.

The woman and her maid yelled for help and a passer-by called the police.

After searching around the area, police intercepted an Indian man  about 100 meters from where the theft had occurred and allegedly found the stolen bag, which contained valuables and a mobile phone.

The suspect is an asylum seeker holding a temporary Hong Kong identity card. Police are investigating to see if he has a criminal record.
