A 40-year-old South Asian man was arrested by customs officers at Hong Kong airport on Sunday for allegedly smuggling drugs.

The man, who claimed to be a businessman, arrived at Hong Kong International Airport from Thailand on Sunday morning and customs officers found what they suspected to be cannabis concealed inside his suitcase, according to a government statement.

The seized drugs weighed about 5.2 kilograms and had an estimated street value of about HK$1.4 million (US$178,392). The drugs were wrapped in carbon coated paper bags, which customs men said was an attempt to avoid the X-rays a security, Oriental Daily reported.

The official report did not disclose the nationality of the suspect.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million.
