About 200 people were lined up several hours before the opening of the first Jollibee fast-food shop in Macau on Wednesday morning.
The crowd, mostly Filipino migrant workers, gathered on the second floor of Circle Square in the city centre before Jollibee Macau opened at 11am.
Jollibee announced earlier this year that it would soon open its first restaurant in the Asian casino capital, and launched a dedicated Facebook page. In a Monday post on the page, the Filipino fast-food giant said the first 100 customers of the new shop would receive a free Jollibee Doll.
“No need to ride a ferry or fly a plane because Jollibee is #NowInMacau,” it said.
Klaas Holzmann, a Macau-based teaching consultant, told Kumbang Toh! News that he thought he would have won a free doll by arriving early, only to find that many people had been waiting since 8am.
Dutchman Holzmann, who has lived together with his Filipina wife in Macau for several years, said he is a big fan of Jollibee. He said the new shop is a source of great encouragement for Filipino workers in Macau.
There are several thousand Filipino migrant workers in Macau, as well as a few thousand more who have permanent residency.
