A Filipino domestic worker has been jailed for 12 months for stealing jewelry and other valuables worth 500,000 dirhams (US$136,147) from the home of her employer in Dubai earlier this year.

The 34-year-old took 12 perfume bottles, a laptop computer, a designer bag, five rings, eight bracelets, two necklaces, earrings, cosmetics, three mobile phones and four watches, Khaleej Times said.

Her employer contacted Al Barsha police on January 31 after being told by her son that the domestic worker had stolen his wife’s necklace. Police searched her room and found the missing necklace, as well as other valuables that belonged to the employer and her daughters.

Police did not arrest the Filipina until February 10, when the employer said that she no longer wanted the woman to stay at her house.

The domestic worker was found guilty of workplace theft at the Court of First Instance on Sunday, and sentenced to one year in jail. She will be deported after serving her sentence.
