An 85-year-old retired police sergeant says he feels victimized by an employment agency on Penang Island, Malaysia, that refused to reimburse him when the Indonesian domestic workers they handled kept running away.
The elderly employer spoke to media on Monday afternoon, recounting his bad experiences in securing a maid, Sin Chew Daily (Malaysia) reported.
At the beginning of the year, he wanted to hire a maid to look after his wife who had been discharged from hospital after recovering from a bacterial infection.
They paid 18,500 ringgit (US$4,630) to an employment agency in Farlim, Penang, to arrange for an Indonesian maid to work at their home in Chai Leng Park, Penang.
The first maid allegedly disappeared after four days of work, and the agent promised to send a replacement.
Two weeks ago, the second worker, who had been working for the family for four months, asked for a 2,000 ringgit advance on her salary because she wanted to take two weeks off to return to Indonesia to reunite with her daughter, who was getting married in August.
The couple politely rejected the maid’s request, suggesting she could take the leave later when it was closer to her daughter’s wedding day.
On June 4, the maid apparently disappeared without taking her passport or clothes. When her employer was unable to contact her, he reported the matter to the agency, but it refused to help or arrange a new maid for the family because the three-month surety period had passed.
It was learned that the employer’s daughter had reported the case to police.
The agency told the media that a full refund in this case was unlikely because much of the 18,500 ringgit service fee included necessary payments for arranging the maid’s work permits and a three-month salary payment.
