A Taiwanese man was fined NT$100,000 (US$3,300) by Taichung District Court after pleading guilty to failing to pay an Indonesian woman overtime wages of NT$50,000 between November 2016 and February 2017.

In November 2016, the employer surnamed Li hired an Indonesian migrant via an employment agency to work in his factory as a packaging worker, China Times reported.

The woman was required to work for 11.5 hours on weekdays plus eight or 8.5 hours on Saturdays and Sundays.

The court also learned that after work at the factory, Li made the victim visit his home and do domestic chores such as the laundry, washing vehicles and sweeping the floor.

When she refused to work overtime at the factory or had not taken “good enough” care of the employer’s house, Li would threaten to punish her or beat her up unless she obliged or met his standards.

By February 2017, the accumulated outstanding amount of overtime pay reached more than NT$50,000 and prompted the victim to call the 1955 Foreign Worker Hotline to lodge a report about abuse and labor exploitation to the police.

Li pleaded guilty to violating the Human Trafficking Prevention Act (HTPA) and was fined NT$100,000. He was sentenced to four months in jail but the term could be suspended for two years.
