A drunken woman who jumped off the Central Pier into Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor was rescued on Thursday morning by a member of the police emergency unit.
The officer jumped into the water and dragged her onto a board before she was swept away. The 28-year-old woman and the exhausted police officer were then picked up by a police launch.
She was admitted to a hospital for checks and was in a stable condition.
She was seen drinking alone on a bench near Pier 3 on the Central waterfront at about 5am on Thursday morning before she jumped into the water. Passersby called police and a group of constables and emergency unit members rushed to the scene, according to the Apple Daily.
The woman was agitated while being rescued and police believe she was having problems with her boyfriend. A police investigation was still underway.
The officer who saved the woman said he was happy to be able to save a life. He said he hoped the woman would recover and start her life afresh.
