A 25-year-old Indonesian domestic helper has been jailed for eight months after pleading guilty to pinching and hitting her employer’s nine-year-old daughter, who has a developmental disorder.
Named only as Atika, the woman was employed in October 2017 mostly to care for the totally-dependent girl, who has chromosome 18q- syndrome with global developmental delay, the Shin Min Daily News reported. Sufferers are either missing part of chromosome 18 or it has been altered.
A court heard on Friday that the maid assaulted the girl on various occasions between January and May this year when she became frustrated at caring for her. The first incident occurred in January, when she struck the girl on the head with a spoon.
On May 9 she pinched the girl on one arm because she had vomited into the sink while being taken to the toilet. The following day, the maid scratched the girl on the back while showering her, then pinched her hard on the upper lip when the child urinated on the toilet floor.
The worker later admitted to her employer that she had physically abused the girl on other occasions. A medical examination revealed abrasions, scars and bruises over the child’s arms, lips and body.
