A Filipino man lost 33,000 dirhams (US$8,985) from his account after he was conned into believing he had won a prize by two Pakistani men.
The 47-year-old man said that while he was working at a veterinary clinic, he received a call from someone who claimed to be from a telecom firm and was told he had won 500,000 dirhams (US$136,147), the Khaleej Times reported.
The man was asked to provide his personal information, including his bank card details. He later discovered that 33,000 dirhams had been withdrawn from his account and realized he was a victim to a scam. The man called the Bur Dubai police station.
Two Pakistani men, aged 32 and 35, were arrested and charged with fraud and forgery. The two men admitted to defrauding other people and falsely claiming they worked for a phone services firm.
The two men told people that they had won a cash prize and then asked for their bank details and withdrew money from their accounts. They admitted used the money to shop online and the resold the products they bought.
