An Indonesian man paid back missed alimony payments totally over $10,000 to his ex-wife with hefty bags of coins, which weighed about 890 kilograms.
Dwu Susilarto, a 54-year-old civil servant, went to court on August 23 with 12 sacks filled with loose change worth 153 million rupiah (US$10,500), Agence France-Presse reported.
Susilarto’s lawyer, Sutarto, said his client was forced to ask his friends for help when the court in Karanganyar, Central Java, ordered him to pay about nine years’ worth of unsettled alimony to his former wife, named Hermi Setyowati.
Sutarto said his client had no other options as he received the money from his family and friends.
But the lawyer who represented Susilarto’s ex-wife was infuriated when he saw the bags of coins. He refused to count the money and later had a fight with Susilarto.
Staff at the court were ordered to count the coins.
Setyowati accepted the coins but did not buy her former husband’s excuse about the coins. She said she found the form of payment insulting, as they implied that she was poor.
