Police in Abu Dhabi have detained the driver of a car that struck and killed a Filipina migrant worker who was standing alongside her vehicle on a highway while she checked whether a tire had burst.

The 34-year-old woman, who worked as a sales executive, was hit from behind on the Dubai-Al Ain Road on Thursday, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila said in a statement. Police have taken the driver into custody, the Gulf News reported.

Vice Consul Von Ryan Pangwi, head of the Assistance-to-Nationals Section at the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, said that the embassy will provide legal assistance to the victim’s family should they need it.

Pangwi said the woman’s identity had not been disclosed to protect the privacy of her family in the Philippines, who have yet been  notified. “We cannot release any more information as of now, as the case is under police investigation,” he added.

Hjayceelyn Quintana, Philippine Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, said that the embassy will extend its full assistance in the repatriation of the woman’s remains.
