A 40-year-old Filipina domestic worker was arrested by police for allegedly engaging in a loan-sharking operation in Macau.
Police arrested the suspect surnamed Desiree at her workplace in Taipa on Monday after receiving reports from two Filipina domestic workers who were being harassed by the suspect, Today Macao reported.
After each borrowing 6,000 Macau patacas (US$764) from the suspect last year, they were forced to pay interest of 1,200 Macau patacas every month, and had to surrender their bank cards, passports and work permits.
The two workers claimed they had paid the interest to the suspect on time each month. After they had each paid back 11,000 Macau patacas and were still being harassed for payments by the suspect, they reported the case to the police.
On Monday, judiciary police officers arrested the suspect and confiscated 45 bank cards and books which recorded the debtors’ details and their signature.
The suspect admitted to the police that she started the loan-shark operation in March last year and targeted Filipino domestic workers in Macau.
So far, she had loaned around 200,000 Macau patacas (US$24,738) to 50 domestic workers.
