Three men who attacked a Vietnamese flight attendant in an airport were ridiculed online after being detained by authorities and asked to explain why they physically assaulted the woman.

On November 23, Le Thi Giang, a flight attendant for VietJet, was kicked and beaten by Pham Huu An, 28, Le Trung Dung, 34, and Le Van Nhi, 41, after she rejected their request for a group selfie at Tho Xuan Airport in Thanh Hoa.

The three were arrested for disturbing public order.

The men tried to blame the incident on the woman’s manners. One of the assailants, Le Van Nhi, said the woman told him he had three seconds to take his hands off her after Nhi grabbed her arm, the VN Express reported. He added that her words upset him, so he hit her.

The man many described as a thug also said they would not have assaulted her if she had been polite to them. His accomplice, Le Trung Dung, was reported to be the son of a former leader of Thanh Hoa district.

The local chief of police is reportedly investigating the case. He condemned the slow response by airport security. VietJet airlines, the company Giang works for, had yet to make an official statement about the incident.
