The MTR Corporation is investigating an escalator breakdown in Tsim Sha Tsui Station in Kowloon during the rush hour on Monday evening.
At 6:36pm, an escalator connecting a platform to the station concourse came to a sudden halt after some metal pieces failed, Apple Daily reported.
A commuter surnamed Chan said he had just used the escalator and when he arrived at the concourse, he heard a loud banging noise coming from behind. Chan turned and saw broken steps, which made some passengers who were riding the escalator scream.
Some passengers jumped off the broken steps but others wanted to leave the escalator so they walked back to the platform. No one was injured.
An MTR spokesperson said the contractor responsible for the maintenance of the escalators was immediately notified and sent workers to undertake investigation and repairs.
Many passengers criticized the railway operator for failing to maintain its services and facilities.
It is the second failure of an escalator in Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station in three months. The last incident happened in August.
