A young Filipino girl won 10,000 dirhams (US$2,723) when she was named the grand champion of a singing competition in Dubai.

On Sunday, 11-year-old Keira Isabelle Celiz, who studies in GEMS Founders School, came first and beat 14 others in the GEMS Best of the Best 2018 – Junior Division, a singing competition held at the Gem Modern Academy, The Filipino Times reported.

According to the girl’s mother Bree, Celiz went through an initial audition alongside 247 others before they were narrowed down to 15 finalists, who competed for the grand prize of 10,000 dirhams and a trophy.

Bree said her daughter’s win was unexpected as the other contestants had undergone voice lessons and training, while Celiz had not and only sings at home for fun.

“We felt very nervous and amazed during her performance. We did not really expect it because all the candidates are superb,” Bree said.

Two other Filipino students, Natalie Kate Atay from Al Khaleej National School and Filipino-Emirati Sara Esmaeili from GEMS Metropole School, competed in the senior division of the same competition.
