The reigning Miss USA has apologized for controversial remarks she made about the English-speaking abilities of Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia during the ongoing Miss Universe pageant, in which she represents the USA.
On Wednesday, videos of Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers, 24, surfaced online after she was seen mocking fellow Miss Universe contestants Nat Rern of Cambodia and H’Hen Nie of Vietnam for not speaking English, according to a report by Hollywood Reporter.
Summers faced harsh criticism on social media, where she was called out for bullying the two women and treating them disrespectfully.
Shortly after the criticism emerged, Summers posted an apology on her Instagram account. The American beauty queen said she had spoken to Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia directly about the incident.
“In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize,” Summers said in her post.
The 2018 Miss Universe pageant is currently being held in Thailand and the coronation will be on Sunday.
