Two students were each sentenced to one year in prison and fined after being found guilty of attempting to rape a Filipino man in Dubai.

On May 14, a 41-year-old Filipino man was approached by a 19-year-old Yemeni student, who told him that he would help him find a job, The National reported.

The student asked the Filipino to accompany him to his apartment in Al Qusais in order that he could first change his clothes. When they arrived at the apartment, the Filipino waited for the student.

The student came out of his room wearing only his underwear, tried to undress the Filipino and asked to have sex with him. The student’s roommate, a Sudanese national, then came out of his room and threatened the Filipino with a knife.

The Filipino managed to escape by jumping from a window, but suffered serious injuries when he landed. A security guard at the building immediately called for an ambulance and reported the incident to the police, who arrested the two students.

The students denied charges of attempted rape at the Dubai Court of First Instance, but were each jailed for a year and ordered to pay 21,000 dirhams (US$5,718) in compensation to the victim.
