An elderly woman was killed and an unknown number of people injured when a car plowed into pedestrians and other vehicles in Hanoi, Vietnam, on January 19.

On January 19, the car was being driven along on Ngoc Khanh Street in Ba Dinh district. The driver suddenly switched to the oncoming lane and ran over two pedestrians, two cyclists and two people on motorbikes before crashing into another car, VN Express reported.

Despite having hit the two pedestrians, the driver did not slow down, eyewitnesses said. Another unnamed witness added that the driver stepped out of the car and did not seem to be alert.

Authorities have yet to disclose more information about the accident, only saying they are investigating it. The driver was thought to have been under the influence of illegal substances.

According to Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee, one person is killed by road crashes every hour.
