Two American men accused of strangling a woman and dumping her body in Pasig River in the Philippines pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared in a regional trial court in Mandaluyong City on Monday.
In December last year, Troy Woody Jr, 21, and Mir Islam, 22, were arrested after being accused of killing Tomi Masters, a 23-year-old American woman who was Woody’s girlfriend, BuzzFeed News reported.
Security footage showed the two suspects loading a box containing the victim’s body into the back of a taxi. The pair then dumped the box into the Pasig River. Authorities fished out the box and found Masters’ body duct-taped and wrapped in a garbage bag.
During questioning, both men admitted to dumping Masters’ body in the river, but blamed the other for her death. However, on Monday at a regional trial court in Mandaluyong City, the two pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The two claimed the woman died from choking on her own vomit and that throwing her body in the river had been a misguided attempt at a burial. Islam said he and Woody told inaccurate stories when they were arrested because they were hungry, which made them “delusional.”
