A 22-year-old man was sentenced to six months in jail at the Hong Kong Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for trying to lure an eight-year-old girl to his home.

The defendant Sum Tin-wai had pleaded guilty to the charge, as well as to one count of loitering causing concern, Oriental Daily reported.

The case happened on 5 December last year when the defendant said he became sexually aroused when he saw the primary school girl aged 8, identified as X who was wearing school uniform in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island.

The defendant followed X back home. He then went downstairs to a public toilet to masturbate.

The defendant then waited for the girl, and when he saw her leave home, he approached her and told her that he would give her HK$200 (US$25.6) if she followed him to his home.

The frightened girl rushed back to her home and informed her parents later that day.

Police officers arrested the defendant by examining surveillance camera footage.

Principal magistrate Peter Law said the case was a serious one, and that as the victim was only eight years old, she was vulnerable and unable to protect herself. Even though the defendant had not physically touched the child, his offence would have a strong effect on the victim.
