A Japanese tourist nearly drowned while watching whales in waters off Oslob in Cebu province in the southern Philippines.

Ken Ishida, 51, was swimming with whale sharks on Sunday morning when he lost unconsciousness. He was found in the water by his wife, who called for people to help rescue her husband, Cebu News Daily reported.

Officer Rolando Baquiran from the Oslob Police Station said rescuers rushed Ishida to the Oslob District Hospital before he was transferred to a private hospital in Cebu for treatment.

Baquiran said Ishida regained consciousness on Monday. According to Ishida’s wife (whose name was not given), Ishida may have lost consciousness while swimming deep with the whale sharks.

“We also asked the wife if her husband had any history of health diseases, but she said there were none,” Baquiran said.

Ishida was wearing a life vest and a diving mask, which helped him float to the surface.

Oslob is located 118 kilometers south of Cebu City and a famous site where people go to watch whale sharks.
