After the arrest of a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman for suspected illegal logging in Chiayi, Taiwan, in mid-March, a 37-year-old man was arrested on Thursday with precious wood valued at NT$20 million (US$647,915) in his home in Changhua County.
On March 18, the Vietnamese woman was arrested by officers from Zhuqi Precinct of the Chiayi County Police Bureau, the Forest District Office of Chiayi and Special Police squad in Alishan after timber and a hand saw were found in her vehicle, the Taiwan Apple Daily reported.
A preliminary investigation found that the woman was part of a syndicate run by the Taiwanese man in Fenyuan Town in Changhua county. On March 21, officers found stolen timber, crystal meth, a Taurus PT92 handgun and a homemade long gun in the man’s car.
The next day officers confiscated timber with an estimated value of NT$20 million (US$647,915) on the black market and three gold bars at the man’s house. Further arrests were expected.
