A 34-year-old Indonesian domestic worker suffered serious injuries and was sent to hospital after she jumped from an expressway on Hong Kong on Sunday.

At 3 am, police received a report from a number of drivers who said they saw a woman wandering on the Island Eastern Corridor, an expressway built along the northeastern shore of Hong Kong Island, Oriental Daily reported.

Police rushed to the scene, but when they arrived at the section near Tong Shui Road where drivers spotted the woman, they did not find anyone. Officers suspected the woman had jumped from the expressway into the sea and launched a search of the area.

Paramedics found the woman, who was unconscious, lying on one of the bridge columns eight meters below the expressway. She had suffered pelvic fractures and a serious injury to her chest. She was rushed to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for treatment.

After an initial investigation, it was confirmed that the woman was a domestic worker from Indonesia. Police had contacted her employer and were investigating the reason for her attempted suicide.
