A 44-year-old Filipina domestic worker called police and asked for help after being kicked out of the employer’s house at midnight in Sheung Shui, the New Territories, on Monday.

The woman claimed she had been fired after a quarrel with her employer, news website HK01.com reported. The employer then forced her to leave the house. She had nowhere to go and called police after wandering around Sheung Shui MTR Station. Police are investigating the incident.

Lau Ka-mei from the Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Unions said it the case revealed the lack of protection for domestic workers. Non-government organizations could provide shelter, but the places were limited.

Lau suggested the government build shelters for distressed workers.

Cheung Kit-man, chairman of the Hong Kong Employment Agencies Association, said both employer and employee can terminate the employment contract by giving not less than one month’s notice in writing or by paying one month’s wages to the other party. The employer also needs to settle all the outstanding wages, holidays, severance payment etc within seven days of termination.

The domestic worker could stay in Hong Kong for 14 days only. Some travel agencies could provide accommodation for them.
